- Outline the standardized dosage and framework of the LSVT BIG protocol.
- Differentiate between evidence-based exercise approaches and the LSVT BIG physical and occupational therapy approach for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
- State the rationale for using a single target of amplitude when working with patients who have PD.
- Recognize how and why intensive training is delivered within sessions and across sessions of LSVT BIG.
- Identify at least three common symptoms of PD which can be barriers to achieving lasting treatment results in people who have PD.
- Summarize research findings that support use of LSVT BIG for persons with PD and other neurological conditions.
- Analyse the seven Maximal Daily Exercises to determine the Parkinson’s specific rationale for each.
- Select appropriate treatment adaptations and progressions to individualize LSVT BIG therapy.
- Apply the five LSVT BIG teaching techniques to train and reinforce improved movement quality in given case scenarios.
- Classify the distinct purposes of Functional Component Tasks, Hierarchy Tasks, and Carryover Assignments within LSVT BIG.
- Determine how to customize elements within the LSVT BIG protocol to address patient specific problems related to freezing with gait, mobility and/or ADLs.
- Evaluate a patient’s feedback and performance to determine if they have been successfully calibrated through LSVT BIG treatment.
- Synthesize information related to a patient’s diagnosis, exam and stimulability testing results to assess if the patient with PD or another condition would be appropriate for LSVT BIG treatment.
- Recommend appropriate follow up care and home exercise practice after discharge from LSVT BIG to help maintain treatment gains and manage PD symptoms long term.

About KPS
Kuching Parkinson’s Society (KPS) began as a support group for people with Parkinson’s, their caregivers and family members in 2015.
Educational sessions given were by various professionals keep the group well informed. It also served as a platform to share experiences and provide emotional support to one another.
As members grew over the years, the volunteers and those affected by Parkinson’s Disease (PD) decided to take the effort to the next level.
In November 2017, Kuching Parkinson’s Society was officially registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation.
In the last few years, Kuching Parkinson’s Society has been active in advocating for better care and management of PD by organising public forums, medical forums, and also training more therapists in PD-specific management and interventions.
To date, the society has sponsored the training of two physiotherapists in advanced PD management, and one LSVT Loud Speech Therapist.
The society is aiming to train more PD-specific trained therapists in 2026, thus, the partnership with Laila Stroke Care Centre to organize the LSVT BIG workshop. This is to ensure that Sarawak and our neighbouring regions will be able to meet the increasing demands of better PD-specific care and management.
